Wind, Fire, Water and Earth : The forces of nature come together in one moment, now.  In this moment we are living, dying, suffering, blissful, loving, loathing.  Our path is the razor's edge of balance between all forces.  In this space, all polarities, matter, anti-matter, subside into emptiness, nothingness.  The eye of the hurricane, at the source of all its energy, but it is still and silent.  Knowing this, is to know the mind of God.

Fire Season in Southern Cal : Right on cue, the first day of Fall, and the Santa Ana's blow and the fires burn.  I would like to have less than two evacuation notices this year... that's a good goal.  All part of the life and death cycle in Southern California.  There are quite a few plants here whose seed pods will not open unless heated to temperatures that only a fire can provide.  This is so much like the spiritual life, the only way to the other side is to walk through the fire.

Windows to the soul? : It is said that the eyes are the windows to the soul.  What do we see in our own eyes?  What do other people see in our eyes?  At times our eyes are mirrors that reflect back to the beholder, feelings about themselves or what they want to be.  Sometimes wise eyes can look into our own and tell us something about ourselves that we have yet to realize or embrace.  It is beautiful when the beholder looks into our eyes and and sees exactly what we understand ourselves to be.  Our breathing gets shallow, the heart may skip a beat, and we feel the flow of a connection that was already there.

My Daily Communion with Nature : Although I live about 30 miles from downtown Los Angeles, I am blessed to have own little mountain forest in my backyard.  The longer days give me more time to enjoy and reflect, watch the rabbits, squirrels and hummingbirds come up to look at the koi fish.

Great Spirit Prayer : Great Spirit Prayer A Native American Prayer by Lakota Sioux Chief Yellow Lark                                                                  Oh, Great Spirit, whose voice I hear in the wind, Whose breath gives life to all the world. Hear me; I need your strength and wisdom. Let me walk in beauty, and make my eyes ever behold the red and purple sunset. Make my hands respect the things you have made and my ears sharp to hear your voice Make me wise so that I may understand the things you have taught my people. Help me to remain calm and strong in the face of all that comes towards me. Let me learn the lessons you have hidden in every leaf and rock. Help me seek pure thoughts and act with the intention of helping others. Help me find compassion without empathy overwhelming me. I seek strength, not to be greater than my brother, but to fight my greatest enemy - Myself (My fears, my doubts, my ego). Make me always ready to come to you with clean hands and straight eyes. So when life fades, as the fading sunset, my spirit may come to you without shame.                                                                                            ~ (translated by Lakota Sioux Chief Yellow Lark in 1887) published in Native American Prayers - by the Episcopal Church. ~
